2016-17 Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to the information below, keep an eye on the B.E.S.T. homepage and/or Facebook page, where we post volunteer calls for imminent events and needs.

It's also important to note that most of these positions/opportunities are best shared by two or more parents. Coordinators will NOT be alone in planning events. There will be as much help available as needed. If you have been thinking about having a larger impact at Birch, this is your chance!

Special Events & Fundraising Volunteers: Don't worry, Birch doesn't sell fruit, candy, wrapping paper, etc. These are FUN volunteer opportunities allowing you to take an active role in the Birch community during our special events.

Bulldog Jog: Planning for this event begins in June, and we need help several times before and during the event. It is our main fundraiser for the year, and the most fun event we have!

Room Parent Representative: Each grade-level teacher has one or two room parent reps that help with parent communication and event coordination. This is a fun volunteer position that requires a maximum or three hours of your time each month. Room parents help plan three classroom parties a year (Halloween, Winter and Valentine's) and may assist the teacher with other projects as needed. Cassie Foote and Chrissy Ferrill are volunteering as this year's Room Parent Rep Coordinators.

In-school Helpers: These volunteers help keep our school running. If you are available one hour a week, one day a week, or on an as-needed basis, these volunteer opportunities are for you! We have a variety of volunteer needs such as classroom help, copy room assistance, crossing guards, library helpers, computer lab monitors, etc. Find a volunteer spot that works for you. You can pick the level of commitment that fits your schedule.

Vision and Hearing Screening: Help our students stay healthy. We need volunteers to assist in administering hearing and/or vision screenings and help gathering students.

Family Dinner Night Volunteers: Occasionally we need a few volunteers to help with publicity for Family Dinner Nights. Typically this will include preparing flyers for Friday Folders, handing out flyers at the circle drive or preparing stickers for kids to wear home. The dinner nights are already scheduled — we just need your help to remind families. Links will be posted here, through our Facebook page and in the eBark as needs arise.

Field Day: Field day is a time-honored tradition at Birch Elementary. This annual event combines the excitement of the end of the school year, (hopefully) a beautiful spring day, and rambunctious elementary school kids. This event is held in May. Volunteers are needed to assist with field day stations, donate watermelons, prepare fruit and hand out refreshments.

Birch Educational Support Team Board: Annually in April, B.E.S.T. nominates and selects new officers to lead our school parent organization. If you would like to be involved with BEST, whether as a member or an officer, email us here.

Teacher Appreciation: A few times throughout the year parents provide meals for the teachers and staff. Meals are needed for both the Fall and Winter Parent/Teacher conferences and during Staff Appreciation Week in May. Show your appreciation to our Birch teachers and staff by following the food donation links provided from time-to-time in the eBark or on our Facebook page. Or volunteer for set-up or clean-up.

Culturally/Linguistically Diverse Parent Liaison: This is a new position. We would like to see this person help reach out to the non-native English speaking community.

DPC (District Parent Council): Attend monthly evening meetings on the third Wednesday of each month) and report back to Birch/B.E.S.T. One representative from every school in the district meets in the evening with the Superintendent to discuss and examine timely and relevant topics that impact the students and schools of the district and report on the great things that are happening at Birch.

5th Grade Continuation Coordinator: Duties take place March-May. This position organizes the 5th grade field trip and continuation ceremony.

Secretary/Public Information Officer: This is a shared position with anther volunteer. Duties include taking/publishing notes from monthly meetings and some advertising. We especially need help submitting articles to the Broomfield Enterprise after major events.
